Century Insurance Guam Credit Rating Upgraded

Best Asia-Pacific Limited has upgraded Century Insurance Guam Issuer Credit Rating (ICR) to a “bbb+” and also affirmed the Financial Strength Rating (FSR) of “B++” (Good). The outlook for ISR has been revised to stable from positive, while the outlook for the FSR is stable.

Century Insurance Guam’s latest ratings reflect on its solid programs and continuous profitable operating results.

Fiesta Saipan Family Fun Day

Fiesta Saipan Family Fun DayFiesta Resort and Spa Saipan employees took a day off as they celebrated Fiesta’s first ever Family Fun Day last July 7 at the resort’s beach front.

Alongside their families, the resort employees were treated to a day of fun activities, games, special presentations, surprise prizes and delectable dishes. Kids and adults got to enjoy the resort’s swimming pools and other facilities.

Resident Manager Abner Acosta designed the event as a token for the employees’ dedication, loyalty and hard work they convey in the Resort. And due to the success and camaraderie fostered by the event, Acosta plans to make Fiesta Family Fun Day an annual event.

George Chiu speaks at China Tourism Symposium

George Chiu Talks in a panel in Outbound ChinaTan Holdings Executive Vice President George Chiu joined experts from the tourism industry on a panel at the China Outbound Travel Market Symposium to discuss the challenges Guam faces as they attract the vast Chinese tourist market.

The afternoon panel engaged its audience on how culture and infrastructure are important factors in the growing tourism market. Chiu discussed what he deems important: to provide the Chinese tourists an authentic cultural experience and to have the infrastructure to accommodate the growing number of visitors.

The China Outbound Travel Market Symposium was held last May 22 at the Hyatt Regency Guam.

Relay for Life 2013

Relay for Life 2013Team members from Tan Holdings and its Strategic Business Units; CTSI Logistics Guam, Fiesta Resort Guam, Century Plaza, Blue Bay Petroleum, Cosmos Distributing, Tango Theaters, D&Q, and Asia Pacific Airlines, raised their banners as they help to fight Cancer in Relay for Life 2013, held last May 24 at Mangilao, Guam.

The annual event aims to raise funds for the American Cancer Society for research and treatment of the disease. The 12-hour event also pays tribute to cancer survivors as well as giving honor to those who lost their battles.

Relay for Life 2013 raised half a million dollars; thanks to the support and efforts of the 78 teams and 594 individuals who participated.

 

Jerry Tan appointed as Taiwan Consultant

s Club International 204 District Administrator Monito CoTan Holdings President and CTSI Logistics CEO Jerry Tan had been appointed by Taiwan as their official consultant for their overseas compatriot affairs commission in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).

Monito S. Co, Lion’s Club International District 204 District Administrator, announced Tan’s appointment in a brief ceremony held at Kanoa Resort Saipan. Co shared that Tan’s appointment is highly significant for the development of the CNMI, particularly in its economy.

Tan will coordinate with the Taiwanese government on issues significant to the region and to Taiwan.

SOPHIA Walk 2013

SOPHIA Walk 2013The Marianas Walking Association teamed up with Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan to host the annual SOPHIA Walk last May 18.

The event drew more than a hundred participants with the youngest and oldest walkers receiving recognition for their involvement. The oldest female walker, Jo Izumi, served as the spokeswoman for the Japanese visitors and delivered the opening remarks of the event. Izumi is 92 years old.

Named after the former First Lady of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Island (CNMI), SOPHIA stands for Saipan Outdoor Physical Health Invigorating Adventure.

Tree Planting with MINA and DEQ

Tree planting with MINA and DEQTan Holdings, along with the with the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance (MINA) and the Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ) planted 120 Coconut Trees on Laolao Bay last April 19 as part of the Environmental Awareness Month and CNMI Earth Day celebrations.

60 company executives with MINA and DEQ staff and volunteers participated in the event, making it the largest tree planting activity turnout for Tan Holdings.

Lina Dimaano, Tan Holdings Vice President for Finance, said Tan Holdings plans to hold quarterly tree planting events in order to promote environmental stewardship within the organization and to ensure sustainability for future generations.

Tan Holdings planted 400 Flame Trees throughout the island last year to mark their 40th anniversary in doing business in Micronesia.

The Tan Siu Lin Foundation has joined the 32nd Annual Flame Tree Arts Festival as a sponsor by donating $3,000 worth of free hotel accommodations to delegates from Kiribati, Chuuk, and Guam.

Tan Holdings Corporate Consultant David Sablan and Tan Siu Lin Foundation Manager Maggie Sablan shared that the foundation is honored to partner with the council and the festival organizers for the hospitality demonstrated to the delegates. David Sablan added that the foundation was very happy to be part of the festivity and understands its significance not only the people of Saipan but to the enhancement of the island’s tourism.

Festival Coordinator Parker Yobei said the the Tan Siu Lin Foundation has always been a proud supporter of the festival. He added his acknowledgement to the foundation’s efforts to promote, preserve, and perpetuate the cultural heritage of the Northern Marianas and the Commonwealth region.

The 32nd Annual Flame Tree Arts Festival occurred last April 19 to 21 at the Susupe, Saipan.

For the third time, Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan received the Diamond Award from Rakuten Travel. The award is in recognition of Fiesta’s top outstanding sales volume and overall hotel performance and customer satisfaction of the year.

Rakuten Travel, Japan’s largest online reservation website, hosts an annual awarding ceremony in celebration of the achievements of outstanding hotel operators. This year’s event was held at the Claret Hall in Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan last March 14.

Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan is a proud recipient of the 2013 Diamond Award and will continue to conduct excellent service to its every guest.

Tan Holdings holds annual JP Walk

IMG_4157300 participants remembered and celebrated the memories of John “JP” Pangelinan, former Tan Holdings executive and Saipan Tribune publisher, last February 23 at the 5th JP Walk hosted by Tan Holdings.

Family, friends, former colleagues, co-workers and other community members gathered across the JP Center along Beach Road as early as 5 a.m. to begin the three-mile walkathon. The event served as both a tribute and a fundraiser that raised more than $2,000.

John Pangelinan died at the age of 70 after his long battle with lung cancer. Since his death, Tan Holdings has hosted the JP Walk in his honor.

Tan Holdings’ students prevails at JA competition

The Tan Holdings sponsored group of high school students received numerous awards from the Junior Achievement of Guam Company Program. The awarding ceremony was held at the Aurora Resort and Spa in Tumon last December 15. For months, participating students have been learning about the various aspects and fundamentals of business. Home, the Tan Holdings group entry won a total of 6 awards including Company of the Year (2nd place), Best in Show, Best in Commercial (2nd place) and President of the Year (Erika Tsuji). The group finished at 2nd place overall in the competition and is chosen to be one of the representatives of the region to the Asia Pacific Junior Achievement Company of the Year Competition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on February 2013. The Junior Achievement of Guam is a non-profit organization that has served more than 5000 students since 1976. The program aims to help young people to learn, appreciate and understand the forming a business and the significance it brings in the society.

Blue Bay Petroleum, Inc. reaches out to the victims of typhoon Bopha

With the amount of severe damage super typhoon Bopha caused in the region of Palau, Blue Bay Petroleum stepped up to lend a helping hand and donated $10,000 to the victims of the typhoon. Blue Bay Petroleum Station Manager Ralph Moses stated that the company believes it’s their obligation, as a member of the private sector, to reach out to the community in this time of need. Moses added that Palau is Blue Bay’s home and being able to help out is important to the company. Super typhoon Bopha barreled through Palau on the eve of December 3 and caused massive destruction that left many families homeless and the communities in distraught.

Fiesta Resort Staff visits sick kids

The patients of the CHC Pediatric Ward got a merry surprise last December 21, 2012 as volunteers from Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan sang Christmas carols and holiday cheers to the sick children. The volunteers serenaded the kids with classic holiday songs like Jingle Bells, Joy to the World, Feliz Navidad and many more. They also gave the children Santa hats filled with various gifts and goodies. Along with all the affiliates of Tan Holdings, Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan is proud to promote the spirit of volunteerism, dedicated to bring joy and betterment to the community.

Concert King serenades Saipan

More than six thousand people stood at the fields of Hopwood Jr. High School in Chalan Piao last November 30 for the return of the Philippine Concert King, Martin Nievera. The remarkable vocals from the Rhythm and Harmony Glee Club of Marianas High School set the mood as they opened the event with their performance of classical and Broadway hits. Followed by the concert’s front act, Martin Nievera along with his ensemble took on the spotlight. The Philippine Concert King sang a range of beautiful, unforgettable love songs, Christmas songs, and several theme songs from popular past and present Philippine television series. Nievera also sang upbeat songs for the younger crowd as he did covers of today’s best music. The free concert was sponsored by Tan Holdings in celebration of their 40 years of doing business in Micronesia as well as a token of their gratitude for the communities in the region for their four decades of support. Tan Holdings President Jerry Tan stated that Tan Holdings will continue to remain committed to the region in terms of business and social progress. “We look forward to forging new friendships, taking care of existing ones, and strengthening the bond with our communities.” The concert was hosted by Tan Holdings corporate affairs manager Ed Arriola Jr. and Tan Theaters Marketing Director Bojo Molina and facilitated by volunteers from the United Filipino Organization and the Shirley’s FC.

UOG receives $1M donation to their Capital Campaign program

Keeping its unending commitment to support education for the people of Micronesia, the Tan Siu Lin Foundation generously donated $1 million to the University of Guam (UOG) last November 26 at the atrium of the Jesus and Eugenia Leon Guerrero School of Business and Public Administration Building. Tan Holdings’ President and Tan Siu Lin Foundation Vice Chairman, Jerry Tan along with Tan Holdings’ Executive Vice President and the foundations’ director, George Chiu presented the check to UOG President, Robert Underwood and the UOG Endowment Foundation Vice President, Gov. Joseph Ada. According to university officials, the funds will be used for the construction of four priority buildings on UOG’s Mangilao campus. UOG Alumnus, Jerry Tan stated that he wanted to give back to his Alma Mater in support of the university’s development of state-of-the-art campuses and to ensure the students will stay on Guam and not to attend schools elsewhere. Tan said that he is excited to help UOG, as its students will become the region’s future workforce. The Tan Siu Lin Foundation became the first organization to pledge $1 Million to UOG’s five-year fundraising program called the Capital Campaign. The campaign hopes to raise $30 million by the year 2017 in which will help pay for the numerous projects of the university.

The tree planting activity was held at the Marpi Area last October 31. Volunteers were joined by Tan Holdings President Jerry Tan who saluted their whole hearted volunteerism in the endeavor to keep the commitment of the company’s environmental stewardship. Hopwood Jr. High partners with Tan Holdings

Hopwood Jr. High has taken a step to go green by partnering with Tan Holdings’ tree planting initiative.
Fifty 8th grade students along with forty Tan Holdings’ executive planted 75 flame tree saplings within the Chalan Piao Campus last October 1. The event coincided with the observance of the Commonwealth of Arbor Day, a global holiday that encourages the public to plant and care for trees.
At the moment, Tan Holdings has planted a total of 325 flame trees and aims to plant 400 flame trees within the year as part of their 40th anniversary celebration.

Wai Wai at Kanoa Resort Saipan

It was barbeque haven as Kanoa Resort Saipan held a Japanese Wai Wai Barbeque Event last October 1, 2012.
Kanoa guests got to choose from delectable meat choices of sirloin steak, chicken, sausages, prawn, fish and skewered squid with vegetables, cob corn, rice balls and salads. Kids got to enjoy a plate of pasta, French fries and chicken and played some parlor games and egg hunting.
The Wai Wai event was initiated by tour operator, JTB World (PMT) three years ago. The Japanese word Wai Wai in context means “Many people merry making with loud sounds”.

Fiesta and POI joins career fair

Last September 19, Pacific Oriental Inc. and Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan joined the Public School System Cooperative (PSSC) Education Career Fair held at Saipan World Resort.

The Career Fair is for the cooperative education and training program intended for students in the upcoming fall semester. Students were given a glimpse of the corporate world as they submit applications and undergo real business interviews with the participating business establishments. Students hired through the career fair will be trainees at their employer’s establishment.

Other establishments that participated were: the CNMI Judiciary, Hard Rock Café, Hyatt Regency Saipan, IT &E, Joeten Enterprises, the Law Office of Robert Torres, Northern Marianas Housing Corp., Saipan World Resort and the Workforce Investment Agency.
