Tan Holdings Actively Participates in International Cleanup

Tan Holdings President Jerry Tan, a keen supporter of environmental efforts in the CNMI, lauded the Tan Holdings team’s participation in the 24th annual International Coastal Cleanup, which was held last September 19.

The team ardently participated in the said cleanup, with over 100 volunteers from the company who supported this worthwhile international initiative against ocean debris.

The International Coastal Cleanup is considered by many as the world’s largest volunteer effort to help protect our ocean and waterways. It was pioneered by Ocean Conservancy as a means to advocate for the preservation of the ocean waters against ocean debris.

Community Members Urged to Uphold Tourism Industry

Predicting that the industry will experience a boost if more members of the community will join the Marianas Tourism Education Council (MTEC), Saipan Grand Hotel GM Ed Cho encouraged those who want the tourism industry to flourish to join the organization.

By the standards set by MTEC, any person, business entity, association, organization or agency can become an MTEC member by volunteering to support the council’s activities or by making a monetary or in-kind contribution.

“Tourism is everybody’s business, and we are looking for new ways to partner with our community, especially our youth, in support of the industry,” says Cho.  He further stresses that the council welcomes anyone who wants to join in this important endeavor.

Cho is the president of MTEC, an association that aims to foster and improve community understanding of the visitor industry; to educate the general public, especially school students, about the value, social benefits and economic contribution made to the community by the tourism industry.

TSL Foundation Sponsors Comic Event for Children’s Cause

Tan Siu Lin Foundation decides to sponsor a comic event which will be staged at the Taga Hall of the Saipan World Resort on September 19.  The show will carry the title Kambal sa Tawa and will be graced by Vice Ganda and Ogie Diaz, two renowned television comedians in the Philippines.

According to reports, this marks the first time for Philippine standup comedians to perform on Saipan.

Part of the proceeds will benefit the Philippine-based children’s’ welfare program called Bantay Bata Foundation.

Century Tours’ Henry Pun Helps Chinese Victims of Fire

Henry Pun of Century Tours took charge of communicating with some confused Chinese who were caught in a fire incident on a large employee barracks in Koblerville, Saipan last August 16.

According to reports, the 25 Chinese victims of the fire were anxious because they do not understand other languages aside from their own.

Henry helped appease the Chinese victims by talking to them in their native language.  Henry did this through the directive of the American Red Cross.

After reporting to the American Red Cross, Henry shared that, “The workers were very happy that there was assistance for them and for my assistance as many of them were scared and didn’t quite understand what was available for them.”

Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan Ties up with CHC Volunteers Association

Starting September 1 of this year, the lunch buffet of Chambre Bar at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan will be adjusted from $5.99 to $6.99 and the $1 increase would benefit a good cause – the Commonwealth health Center (CHC) Volunteers Association.

Annie Benavente, the association’s vice president, said this tie-up will boost their chances of buying a hyperbaric chamber for the hospital.

A hyperbaric chamber is instrumental in treating decompression sickness, gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene resulting from infection by anaerobic bacteria, tissue injury arising from radiation therapy for cancer, and wounds that are difficult to heal.

Through this partnership with Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, the CHC Volunteers’ is hoping to raise $400,000 for the said equipment.

Tan Siu Lin Foundation Finances Scholarship Program for NMC Students

Pursuant to its vision of upholding intellectual development among students who want to attain higher education but are restrained by financial limitations, the Tan Siu Lin Foundation recently announced a scholarship program for ten of the most deserving students from the Northern Marianas College (NMC).  The Foundation will provide $1,000 per scholarship recipient.

In a statement, Dr. Tan Siu Lin, Chairman and founder shared that:  “We realize the central role that the Northern Marianas College plays in the academic and personal development of students and, on a larger scale, the CNMI’s workforce; and we want to support that role by providing assistance to students who strive hard to excel academically, yet lack the financial means to continuously pursue quality education with the NMC.”

The initial selection for the recipients of the scholarship fund will be based on the students’ academic performance, community involvement activities, and letter of recommendation; after which the students’ written essay will be the final gauge for their eligibility to the TSL Foundation’s scholarship program as the foundation’s scholars.

Tan Siu Lin Foundation Sponsors UBA Basketball League

Tan Siu Lin Foundation recently gave aid to the Unified Basketball Association (UBA) when the association opened a basketball league last August 21.
Carrying the theme “King of Da Court Basketball Tournament”, the basketball games during this two-day league was held at the Garapan Basketball Court.
Prior to this basketball tournament, UBA had previously hosted the Summer Youth Basketball League last May.
The support of Tan Siu Lin Foundation for the UBA is their way of expressing their way vision in improving the well-being of the community by upholding sportsmanship and healthy competition among the youth.
Aside from the Tan Siu Lin Foundation, other sponsors for the tournament were Digital Motion, Figo Brand, and ABC-7 Saipan.

Tan Holdings and Affiliates Support Korean Ballet Group

On August 22, Saturday, Tan Holdings and its affiliates Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan and Saipan Tribune co-sponsored the musical performance of the famous Kim In Sook Grand Ballet Company at the Hibiscus Hall of Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan.
According to the main sponsor of the event, the Central Association of Culture and Arts, the show is also an initiative in promoting friendship between Saipan and Korea.
Aside from the 20 seasoned Korean dancers, local ballet students from the Glushko’s Dance School also participated in this highly-anticipated musical performance.

Century Tours Co-facilitates Familiarization Tour

In partnership with the Marianas Visitors Authority (MVA), Century Tours and Tinian Dynasty Holiday sponsored a familiarization tour (FAM tour) for the representatives of nine media outlets in Shanghai last August 8, 2009.
The group visited Saipan and Tinian, two of the islands that are situated on the Southern part of the CNMI.
The FAM tour is expected to attract more tourists to visit Tinian and Saipan through inbound charter flights from Shanghai.

ESGR Presents Special Award to CIC President

Citing his efforts in securing CNMI employers’ support for the Guard and Reserve, the Employee Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), awarded CIC President David M. Sablan with a Seven Seals Award during the signing ceremony for the statement of support for the members of the Guard and the Reserve last August 15.

According to Sablan, he was pleasantly surprised to receive the Seven Seals Award.

Sablan has been involved with the ESGR since 1985; he was the first State Chairman for the CNMI.  His resignation from the ESGR in 1990 did not keep him from making initiatives for the welfare of the Guard and the Reserve.
ESGR is a U.S. Department of Defense agency that targets the maintenance of employer support for those who are serving for the Guard and Reserve.

Tan Holdings President Expresses Support for Reservists and Guard Members

Tan Holdings President Jerry Tan, together with 16 other supervisors and managers from Tan Holdings, backed the men and women in the Reserve and Guard last August 15, Saturday by signing a statement of support for their re-employment.

According to Mr. Tan, this pledge of support is a way of asserting the company’s belief that the men and women in the Reserve and Guard have had major contributions in the country.

Mr. Tan was quoted by saying, “No returning Reservist or Guard member will have a problem with Tan Holdings when they return”.

At present, a total of 81 employers and supervisors have signed the statements of support for the US National Guard and Reserve in Fiscal Year 2009.

Tan Holdings Affiliates Join HANMI Cup

Joint team Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan & Saipan Grand Hotel, defending champion for last season’s HANMI Cup, will be competing for the 3rd Annual HANMI Cup Inter-Hotel Basketball League which will open on August 22 at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
The other teams who will be vying for the coveted championship title are Tinian Dynasty Hotel and Casino, Saipan World Resort, Aqua Resort Club, Palms Resort Saipan, Pacific Islands Club, and guest team Shirley’s Coffee Shop-Century Hotel.
Northern Marianas Bartenders Association will be organizing the tournament for this year.

POI Aviation Honors Retiring Commonwealth Ports Authority Chief of Police

A special luncheon for retiring Commonwealth Ports Authority Chief of Police Pius M. Helgen was arranged by POI Aviation last June 26, 2009.  The luncheon, held at the Saipan Grand Hotel, served as a simple token of gratitude for the many years of guidance and support that Chief Helgen has given POI.
For his efforts in helping POI Aviation attain maximum safety and security, Chief Helgen received a plaque of appreciation during the gathering.
Chief Helgen has over 30 years of service to the Ports community, for both sea and airport on Saipan.

Saipan Grand Hotel GM Elected as HANMI Board of Director

The Hotel Association of the Northern Mariana Islands (HANMI) concluded its monthly membership meeting last July 30 with an election for three new officials to fill in vacated posts.

Among those elected was Saipan Grand Hotel General Manager Ed Cho, who will be serving as a HANMI board of director for the first time.

HANMI was established in 1985 as a professional forum for the hospitality industry of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

APA Attends FAA Maintenance Safety Seminar

In accordance to the safety practices that it wants to pursue with the rest of the aviation community, representatives from Asia Pacific Airlines (APA) attended the first Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Maintenance Safety Seminar at the Century Park Hotel, Philippines, last June 29 to July 1.
Vice President and General Manager Robert Walker and Aircraft Maintenance Director Baltazar Atalig attended the seminar in behalf of APA.
The seminar, which aimed to standardize safety practices for the aviation community, was conducted by the envoys of the FAA San Francisco International Field Office, FAA Safety Team, and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
An estimated number of 160 aviation industry representatives from China, Japan, Korea. Malaysia, Guam, Taiwan, Singapore, Macau, Papua New Guinea and Philippines participated in the seminar.

Tan Holdings Awarded as the Best Business Float

The 2009 Liberation Day parade in Guam was a momentous event for the Tan Holdings group as their efforts in beautifying their float in the annual parade paid off. Tan Holdings won the most coveted recognition during the celebration.
With the support of Tan Holdings executives as well as the General Managers and team members from Tan Holdings affiliates such as CTSI Logistics, Cosmos Distributing/TAT, Tango Theatres and Unity Development Corporation, the Tan Holdings Group brought home the first place award in the Best Business Float category.

Tan Holdings employees attend Adult CPR and First Aid Training

Tan Holdings continues to strengthen its programs for employees’ welfare; this time, it encouraged its team members to attend an American Red Cross training called the Adult CPR and First Aid Training.  This activity, aimed to promote health and safety for the team members, was held last July 22 at the held at the American Red Cross office.
 
The employees who underwent the training under Lucio Aldan of the American Red Cross Saipan Chapter were:  Gemma de Guzman, Rommel Monserrat, Anthony Acepcion, Abdurajik Aslim, Chrispino Rapugpai, Emmanuel Parian, Rogelio Espiritu, Mercy Aguon and Victor Reyes from POI Aviation; Ariel Jinang and Edgar Garcia from CTSI Logistics; Kurt Sablan from Saipan Tribune and Ana Kim from the OSVP/HR.
 
CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a first-aid method that can restore circulation of oxygen-rich blood to the brain.  This is an essential practice during emergencies and accidents.

Athletes Thank Tan Holdings for Support

Tan Holdings continues to support various individuals’ pursuit for excellence in sports as it recently gave their aid to CNMI junior tennis player Ji Hoon Heo and Filipino runner Ronald Villafria.
Heo is a promising young tennis enthusiast who triumphed over many competitions in and out of Saipan. He was invited to compete in three countries for more than a month. Heo wishes to thanks Tan Holdings, among other companies, for supporting his off-island competitions this summer.
Meanwhile, Ronnel Villafria also expressed his gratitude to Tan Holdings as well as to Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, for the support that he received from them.
Villafria was one of only 6,000 participants who have been pre-screened to take part in the 2009 edition of the Fuji Mountain Race last July 25.

Las Vegas comes to Saipan via the Fiesta Resort and Spa

Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan continues to be one of the more preferred venues for great festivities as the Rotary Club of Saipan chose the hotel for this year’s Las Vegas Night last July 18.

“The event was a huge success – guests swarmed in and everybody had a good time.”  According to Rotary Club Secretary Elly Stoilova, the event had “a good turnout.”

Majority of the revenue for this event would be used to fund the Kagman Community Children’s Park.

POI celebrates 18 years

POI Aviation celebrated its 18th anniversary at the Saipan Grand Hotel last July 18.  It was also an occasion where outstanding team members from the company’s various departments were given recognition for their exemplary work performance.
